Suryodarmo, Melati
1969 born in Surakarta /Indonesia, lives and works in Braunschweig (Germany)

"I intend to touch the fluid border between the body and its environment  through my art work. I aim to create a concentrated level of intensity  without the use of narrative structures. Talking about politics,  society or psychology makes no sense to me if the nerves are not able  to digest the information. I love it when a performance reaches a level  of factual absurdity."

Melati Suryodarma

DER SEKUNDENTRAUM
Duration: ca. 1 hour
Date: 1998
Material: 300 pieces of clothes (provided by the artist)

Performance

I exist within a certain axis of cultural and historical location. Am I able to see clearly where I came from, where I am now or where it's leading me? My consciousness is sharpened in new locations and experiences. Yet it remains difficult to keep a constant vigilance on our perceptions so that we do not fall prey to false consciousness and prejudices nor become victims to propaganda of the market and power of the media and other distortions.
I took a journey to find my identity but yet to avoid the crisis inside my awareness. Searching of something different than where I came from or as inevitabilities in order to continue my existence and growth. Place and time shifted as much as they affect the perceptions and consciousness.
There were stories which I will never forget until the end of my life. There are paths of each story which I will never be able to erase.

The line of construction, the construction of a rule, the rule of conjunction, the conjunction of situations, the situation of stimulations, the stimulation of destructions, the destruction of constructions, zero…. And it should continue again but never been the same as beginning.

The Performance : I fold the clothes which are put on the long table. After all clothes are folded, I put on clothes one upon the other until I barely can move. I try to walk slowly from the front of old building to the new building among the public. When I arrived at the new building, I will disappear.
